라티노의 위협인가, "라티노 시대의 도래"인가? -라티노를 바라보는 시각과 그 문제- = Latino Threat or "Latino`s Coming-of-Age" -Narratives on the Latino Revisited-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국의 라티노는 한편으로는 위협이 되는 부정적 존재로, 또 한편으로는 미국에 긍정적 영향력을 미치는 새로운 주류이자, 새로운 시대의 주인공으로도 나타난다. 라티노는 불법적인 존재이자, 미국의 고귀한 가치, 이상을 품은 미국 사회의 뼈대가 되는 중간계급의 일원으로도 그려진다. 라티노는 미국의 전 방위적 국가 안보의 위협이자 미국을 재생시킬 수 있는 존재로도 간주된다. 이러한 상호 대비되는 이미지, 표상, 담론의 공존을 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까. 우선 오랜 역사를 지닌 라티노에 부정적 시각이 라티노 위협론으로 체계화 되어 등장하자, 이에 대한 대응으로 라티노의 긍정적 면을 강조하고자 하는 시도로 부상한 것이 라티노 신 주류론 이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 라티노가 미국에 위협이 된다는 가정과 마주하여 라티노 옹호자들은 라티노가 안전하고 미국 문화에 긍정적인 역할 뿐 아니라, 미국 문화 재생에 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여줌으로써 이러한 가상의 위협에 대응하였다. 그러나 미국 내 라티노에 대한 인식과 라티노의 위치 제고를 위한 노력이 또 다른 문제의 출발점으로 작동하고 있음에 대한 충분한 고려가 있어야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to introduce and analyze the most influential narratives on the Latino such as Latino threat and Latino`s coming-of-age narratives. Historically, the view that holds the Latino as a threat to the American national security in various ways has been powerful enough, popularizing negative stereotypes and images of the Latino even today. In response to such view, the new version of Latino narratives emerged. The "Latino new mainstream" or "Coming age of the Latino" discourse is the one, designed to counter the negative images, representations, and discourses regarding Latinos. This new and positive one has significant meanings in transforming the meaning of the Latino`s presence in the U.S. Nevertheless, the new one has serious problems, too, and caution is also required.
