“Banyeop”, one of the pieces of Banubangye, smoothly connects the tones when transitioning from the U-jo series to the Gyemyeonjo series, and is sung by both male gagok and female gagok. “Banyeop” has a unique structure that connects the tones in singing a song and modulates it in the middle. The movement trend and flow of the melody of the male gagok “Banyeop” was newly examined by using ‘tonal group theory’.
As a result of examining the melodic lines forming the central skeleton of the song melody of the current male gagok “Banyeop”, the U-jo part is in the ‘太-㑣’ tonal group and the Gyemyeonjo part is the ‘黃(潢)-㑣(林)’ tonal group. You can see that the main tonal group has also changed. At this time, ‘㑣 (林)’, the final ending sound of the two tonal, is the most stable tonal and occupies a large proportion in the melody. On the other hand, although Gagok's U-jo is ‘Hwangjongpyeongjo’, Hwangjong does not function as the main yin and Taejoo takes over. In the writing of Oh Yong-rok's “U-jo Chosudaeyeop”, the main tonal group in the U-jo part is described as ‘太-㑣’, and this is the same as the main tonal group in the U-jo part of my “Banyeop”. If the main tonal group of the two gagok are the same, the question arises as to whether other U-jo pieces also form the same main tonal group as the previous two pieces. I think that it is necessary to examine the melodic structure of various pieces of music more clearly in the future by using the tonal group theory.
