This study examines the evolving valence of baram (“wind”) in the poetry of Park In-hwan, tracing its transformations from Liberation through the Korean War to the postwar era, and reading these shifts as inseparable from changes in the poet’s imaginative worldview. In early, prewar poems, the wind rises as an augury of revolution—a force poised to ascend from below, announcing resistance. Far from a private microclimate, it is a collective wind, a catalytic medium breathing change into a social atmosphere ulcerated by colonial violence yet suspended in hollow stillness.
By the Korean War, the wind darkens into a premonition of death. The poetic subject, recognizing that neither he nor his contemporaries can escape mortality, confronts an unassailable vulnerability and the paralysis of its warning. Surrendering to the wind, he drifts toward the death-drive, fastening himself to a past where pain and memory are inseparable. This fixation becomes an unconscious echo toward loss, a sustained mourning for the dead, and an unflinching gaze into existential anxiety. The longing for the real takes shape in rhetorical images that reconfigure reality—through fantasy and the crossings between fantasy and the real.
Such figuration serves as a tactic of resistance within everyday life, an insurgent refusal of the strategies by which the violent world deceives. Micro-subjects invent private idioms that fracture the totalizing power seeking to subsume progressive temporality, historical violence, and mourning into “normal” categories, remaking themselves as chroniclers of lowercase history. Park’s rewriting of reality through fantasy seeks to seize, even amid death’s pervasive omens, the fissures in oppressive order and reclaim them as auguries of change.
In this arc, the poetic subject shifts from a passive body borne upon the wind to an active agent breathing winds of hope and possibility back into the world. The wind-subject’s trajectory—(1) revolutionary portent → (2) death’s omen → (3) death-drive → (4) regeneration, life-affirmation, and the atmosphere of hope—culminates in an embrace of the fate that a life of engagement is shadowed by anxiety. Yet, through “wind-poems,” the subject reaffirms that a trembling life mediates both ontological essence and beauty. Beginning in the individual and radiating into the communal, this process intimates a collective praxis: an ontological écriture seeking to wrench life back from death and to open its horizon anew.
