This paper attempts to re-read the nature and limitations of the 'World Literature as Ideology' discourse that unfolded in the South Korean critical scene since the 2000s, focusing on the arguments of the Changjakgwa Bipyeong (Creation and Criticism, hereafter referred to as Changbi) group and Cho Young-il. The key concept referenced for this purpose is the 'transnational.' The transnational is a fundamental critique of the 'national' as a modern (thought) system supporting the nation-state, and it is a critical and epistemological project that seeks to violate, traverse, and (re)translate the national.
The Changbi group, which spurred and led the world literature discourse in the Korean literary field after the 2000s, diagnosed that global capitalism had put both world literature and national literature into crisis. They thus proposed a project of 'World Literature as a Solidarity of National Literatures' to resist 'market totalitarianism'. Consequently, the world literature promoted by Changbi is not in conflict with national literature. In Changbi's world literature discourse, which reaffirms the 'nation' as the final authority, other categories, including gender, remain subsidiary, and the inherent multiplicity within the nation or literature is not properly reflected. In the Changbi world literature discourse, which re-approved the 'nation' as a capitalized category and was conceived within the modern (literary) universal framework of history, realism, and literariness, it was difficult to explore the possibility of an 'other' world literature that violates, crosses, and retranslates the national.
On the other hand, Jo Yeong-il criticizes the ethno-centrism inherent in Changbi's world literature discourse and argues that a world literature based on transnational artistic achievement that transcends national literature is the true meaning (眞意) of Goethe's ideal. However, in Jo Yeong-il's discussion, which emphasizes 'achievement in art' as the necessary and sufficient condition for a world literature that crosses 'literature-within-the-nation', 'artistic quality/literariness' is diverted into a convenient and ambiguous standard for identifying (world) literature. This betrays a different set of modernistic limitations—namely, a masculine-centric or elitist provincialism—distinct from Changbi's ethno-centric provincialism.
Therefore, in the South Korean-originated 'World Literature as Ideology' discourse, which sought to judge the authenticity of world literature by using these provincialisms/modernisms (which have reigned as universals) as new criteria, rather than attempting to cross the modern (literary) system supported by ethno-centrism, masculine-centrism, and elitism, the reflection on the possibility of an 'other' world literature that deviates from the national—that is, a transnational world literature—was inevitably left as a void. This article seeks to reflect upon these limitations of the World Literature as Ideology discourse and to imagine the potential for a transnational world literature through women's/minority literature that falls short of or exceeds the criteria of world literature as national literature and world literature as artistic achievement.
