The purpose of this study was to investigate Korean speech characteristics (disfluency and speech rates) of normal standard speakers. There were two research questions. The first was whether normal adult speakers who use the standard language show meaningful differences in disfluency and speech rates (overall speech rates and articulation rates) according to dissimilar speech tasks (story-telling and text-reading). The second was whether different speakers (normal adult speakers, professional announcers and political speakers) show meaningful differences in disfluency and speech rates (overall speech rate and articulation rate) in the task of text-reading.
The participants of the study were 156 adult Korean men and women aged 18 years or older (60 normal standard speakers, 40 text-reading groups who use the standard language, 30 text-readers who are professional announcers and 26 text-reading groups who are political speakers). Speech data of normal standard speakers were collected by having them select and discuss one of three themes presented to them. As well, text-reading data of speakers who use the standard language was gathered by having them read 800 syllables from the reading material for Junior High School students or higher in the Paradise-Fluency Assessment (P-FA). The text-reading data from the professional announcers group and oratory speaker group were collected through recording their readings by microphone. All speeches which last four minutes in length or greater were recorded, but three minutes (180 seconds) worth of recordings were analyzed by excluding 30 seconds each at the beginning and end. The speech data were transcribed and then confirmed three to five times to enhance the accuracy of disfluency analyses. In addition, recorded data were entered into computers as the waveforms of the PCQuirer 5.0 Program and the overall speech rate and articulation rate through such waveforms were measured.
Whether the normal adult speakers demonstrated meaningful differences in the disfluency and speech rate (overall speech rate, articulation rate) according to speech tasks (speaking, text-reading) is as follows: in the disfluency analyses, the most frequent types of disfluency in the speech task were in the order of "interjection, revision and unfinished phrase," while those in the text-reading task were in the order of "revision, interjection and unfinished phrase." In the analyses of overall speech rate, the average overall speech rate per second in the speech task was 4.20 SPS (syllables per second) (SD = 0.77) and the overall speech rate per minute was 251.79 SPM (syllables per minute) (SD = 45.98), while the overall average speech rate per second in the text-reading task was 5.11 SPS (SD = 0.44) and the overall speech rate per minute was 306.52 SPM (SD = 26.37). In addition, the overall speech rate indicated a meaningful difference depending on the speech tasks (speech rate per second t = -6.771. p < .001, speech rate per minute t = -6.765. p < .001). In case of articulation rate, the average articulation rate per second in the speech task was 4.41 SPS (SD = 0.70) and the articulation rate per minute was 264.71 SPM (SD = 42.05), while the average articulation rate per second in the text-reading task was 5.13 SPS (SD = 0.43) and the articulation per minute was 308.05 SPM (SD = 25.49). In the articulation rate, furthermore, there was a meaningful difference depending on the speech task (speech rate per second t = -5.801, p < .001, speech rate per minute t = -5.796, p < .001).
Whether there are meaningful differences in the disfluency and speech rate (overall speech rate, articulation rate) according to speakers (adult normal speakers, professional announcers, political speakers) the text-reading task is as follows: In the analyses of disfluency, the most frequent types of disfluency among normal speakers were in the order of "revision, interjection and unfinished phrase." Those in professional speakers were in the order of "revision, unfinished phrase and interjection," displaying a pattern similar to that of normal adult speakers. The most frequent types of disfluency among oratory speakers were in the order of "interjection, revision and unfinished phrase." In other words, identical types of disfluency were most frequently observed among all speaker groups in text-reading tasks.
In the analyses of overall speech rate, the overall average speech rate per second of normal speakers was 5.11 SPS (SD = 0.44) and the overall speech rate per minute was 306.52 SPM (SD = 26.37). The overall average speech rate per second of professional speakers was 5.70 SPS (SD = 0.33) and the overall average speech rate per minute was 342.09 SPS (SD = 19.52). The overall average speech rate per second of oratory speakers was 4.53 SPS (SD = 0.43) and the overall average speech rate per minute was 271.74 SPM (SD = 25.55). In addition, the overall speech rate per second showed significant differences according to speaker groups (F = 56.772. p < .001) and the overall speech rate per minute also showed significant differences according to speaker groups (F = 56.895. p < .001). In the analyses of articulation rate, the average articulation per second of normal speakers was 5.13 SPS (SD = 0.43) and the articulation rate per minute was 308.05 SPM (SD = 25.49). The average articulation rate per second of professional speakers was 5.73 SPS (SD = 0.39) and the articulation rate per minute was 343.52 SPM (SD = 23.05), The average articulation rate per second of oratory speakers was 4.56 SPS (SD = 0.44) and the average articulation rate per minute was 273.84 SPM (SD = 26.62). In addition, the articulation rate per second showed significant differences according to speaker groups (F = 52.723. p < .001) and the articulation rate per minute also showed significant differences according to speaker groups (F = 52.518. p < .001)
This study can be used as some meaningful guideline and the basic data to differentiate normal and language disorders in various areas of speech pathology, particularly in fluency disorders, hearing impairments, voice disorders, aphasia and dysarthria, by presenting circumstantial data on the patterns and frequencies of disfluency and speech rate of normal adult speakers. In the case of stuttering in particular, the data gained from normal adult speakers will serve as crucial information that can help determine the characteristics and curability of stuttering through its comparison with the data gleaned from adults who stutter, as it is perceived that the speech rate of persons with stuttering problems are faster than that of normal speakers.
