재미 화인작가의 작품을 통해서 본 화인 사회의 초국가성: 린위탕의 장편소설 “Chinatown Family”를 중심으로 = Transnationalstate in the works of the Chinese American writers: Focus in novel “Chinatown Family”

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the narrative of thetransnationality in American immigrant novels. In particular, I examinedthe transnational phenomena inherent in the immigrant society, focusing onthe novel “The Chinatown Family” written by the novelist Lin Yutang.
“Chinatown” is a time and space where foreigners as people who can notreturn to their home country can feel the nostalgia of their hometown, andcan project their own bond in western society. In this category, thetransnation is a category that includes trans-region, and it is “越” or “跨”which means across borders, rather than across national and ethnicconcepts.
The reason why I wanted to deal with the transnationality in this paperis to understand the cultural and social aspects of the era of globalizationthat transcend the boundaries and interests of a particular country in themodern society. To that end, I wanted to explore the transnationality,which is a common feature of the Diaspora literary works. The charactersin Lin Yutang's work are not limited to one place, but are creating new spaces by crossing the boundaries between the mother country and foreigncountries. The transnational identity is created through the life of the maincharacter Tom(湯姆) who lives in a transnational space.
What this paper highlights is not that the transnationality in a way ofovercoming national and ethnic barriers but rather that it is whatimmigrants feel when crossing national borders. “Chinatown” is both arepresentative space for their identity and an area driven from the centerto the periphery. While this is a geographically closed space, it is also aspace experiencing social isolation, making it a challenging and subjectivesocial activity space. The transnationality in the American immigrantcommunity is a “transnational identity” created and derived within theboundaries of the state.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 미국 이민소설에 등장하는 초국가적 현상에 대한특성들을 분석해 보는데 있다. 특히 화인 작가 린위탕(林語堂)의 소설“차이나타운 패밀리(Chinatown Family)”를 중심으로 이주민 사회 속에 내재되어 있는 초국가적 현상에 대해 살펴보았다. “차이나타운”은 고국으로 돌아갈 수 없는 자로서의 이방인들이 고향의 향수를 느낄 수 있고,서구사회에서 그들만의 결집력을 분출할 수 있는 시공간을 초월한 초국가적 장소이다. 여기서 초국가란 초지역을 포함하는 범주로서 국가·민족의 개념을 뛰어넘는 의미의 초(超)가 아닌 경계를 밟고 넘어 오가는 월(越) 또는 과(跨)의 의미를 함의하고 있다.
본 논문에서 초국가성을 다루고자 하는 이유는 현대사회가 마주하고있는 탈국가화 현상 즉, 특정 국가의 경계나 이익을 넘어서는 세계화 시대의 문화적 사회상을 이해하기 위함이다. 이를 위해 디아스포라 문인들의 작품에서 보편적으로 나타나는 공통점인 초국가성을 탐구해 보았다.
린위탕의 작품 속에 등장하고 있는 인물들은 한 공간에 국한되지 않고,모국(母國)과 이국(異國)의 경계를 넘나들며 새로운 공간을 창출하고 정체성을 형성해 가고 있다. 차이나타운이라는 초국가적 공간에서 살아가는 주인공 톰(湯姆)의 삶을 통해 형성되어지는 초국가적 주체성을 함의하고 있다.
본 논문이 주목하는 바는 초국가성이 국가·민족을 뛰어넘는 사유방식이 아니라, 국가의 경계를 넘었을 때 더 좁게 죄여오는 지역의 경계라는것이다. 작은 중국으로 형성된 “Chinatown”은 본인들의 정체성을 대표하는 공간인 동시에 중심에서 주변부로 내몰린 지역이다. 이곳은 지리적으로 닫힌 공간인 동시에 사회적 고립을 경험하는 공간인 반면 도전적이고 주체적인 사회활동 공간이 된다. 미국 이민 사회 속에서의 초국가성은 국가의 경계 속에서 생성되고 파생되는 “초국가 정체성”이라고 할 수있다.
