Despite the conventional wisdom that it is next to impossible to determine whether a film will be a success or a failure, there has been research that studied the matter in depth. Drawing upon the previous research, this paper attempts to model the determinants of motion picture box office performance in Korea.
The review of the previous studies suggest that the factors that influence the box office performance of movies can be grouped as creative factors, distribution/business factors, marketing factors, and competitive factors. The model is empirically tested with movies shown in Korea during 1995-2000: Korean movies and Hollywood movies. A multiple regression analysis was used.
The box office performance of films was determined by a combination of creative aspect and distribution aspect. In addition, the determinants of box office success of Hollywood films shown in Korea were different from those of local films.
