This study selects ReelShort, the Chinese short-form drama platform with the highest global market share, and Vigloo, the only Korean platform independently operating a global service, as analytical cases to examine their global expansion strategies across three dimensions: content supply and production organization, monetization and payment design, and user acquisition and market expansion. The analysis draws on publicly available secondary sources including industry reports, third-party data platforms (ADXray, Sensor Tower, etc.), corporate disclosures, media coverage, and prior research, and is grounded in the theories of cultural discount, cultural proximity, platformization, and glocalization, while drawing on platform imperialism as a supplementary perspective for interpreting
contemporary platform dynamics in the global short-form drama industry.
The findings reveal distinct strategic characteristics across the three analytical dimensions, which are manifested in differences in content production systems, user acquisition strategies, revenue geographic distribution, platform identity, and market expansion paths. ReelShort approaches broad mass markets through mass production and simultaneous multi-country, multi-language advertising deployment, systematically diminishing its cultural origin at both the content and corporate levels. Vigloo, in contrast, pursues selective content supply leveraging Korean Wave production infrastructure and a strategy of concentrating on culturally proximate markets with strong familiarity with Korean popular culture, actively utilizing its Korean cultural origin as a brand asset. At the same time, both
platforms demonstrate structural convergence in their monetization infrastructure, centered on the episode-unlock freemium model.
This study interprets these findings through Hoskins and Mirus's (1988) cultural discount, Iwabuchi's (2002) cultural odor, La Pastina and Straubhaar's (2005) multiple proximities, Nieborg and Poell's (2018) platformization, and Robertson's (1995) glocalization. Jin's (2025) platform imperialism is additionally employed as a supplementary perspective for understanding contemporary platform competition. The study also derives practical implications for the global expansion of the short-form drama industry. The significance of this study lies in demonstrating that the globalization of short-form drama platforms does not follow a single path, but unfolds through multiple strategic routes shaped by each platform's cultural resources and strategic choices.
