The main purpose of this study is to investigate the major trend and characteristics shown throughout the history of Korean modern dance in 1980`s by analyzing various factors which affected to the development of Korean modern dance, and to suggest a new direction of creative activity to Korean modem dance. For this the study are examined and in terms of the socio-cultural contexts of modern dance, as well as the educational and artistic aspects of the danceworks and performance activities at that time. The results of analysis of the major trend and characteristics shown by Korean modern dance in the 1980`s are as follows; First, Korean government began to reinforce the folicies of finacial support to the artworld for the re-establishment of the national culture and art of Korea. In addition, Korean dance world in 1980`s flourished vividly in that there were big events such as `Korean Dance Festival` `86 Asian Game` and `88 Seoul Olympic Game.` As a result, The Korean modern dance came to establishe as one of the popular cultures since 1980`s. Secondly, by enlarging the opportunity of dance education in korean university, Korean modern dance got to be popular remarkably and produced a number of professional dancer. Thirdly, the small-theatre-movement and outdoor performance prevaled activiely in the 1980`s made intimate conveyance of message to the audience possible through the free relationship between audience and the space of stage. Especially outdoor performance enlarged the expression scope and stage space, and also contributed to widespreadness of dance audience. And the artistic aspect of Korean modem dance shown in the course of its Koreanization was the beauty of formal expression based on the modern interpretation of the traditional style of dance.
