This study investigated the effects of inhaling an MSO essential oil blend—composed of Marjoram (M), Sandalwood (S), and Orange Sweet (O)—on EEG activity, sleep quality, stress responses, and psychological well-being in adults.
The research consisted of two parts: (1) an EEG experiment assessing changes in relaxation-related brainwave indices following inhalation of MO, SO, and MSO blends, and (2) a 7-day intervention in which participants applied an MSO spray daily, followed by evaluations of sleep (KMLEQ), stress responses (SRI-S), and psychological well-being (PWBS). The results were as follows;
First, EEG analysis showed that MSO inhalation significantly increased relative alpha (RA) and slow alpha (RSA) activity in the frontal and parietal regions (p < .05), and decreased the alpha spectral edge frequency (ASEF) in the frontal and temporal regions (p < .05–.01) among the alpha asymmetry–related indices. These findings indicate enhanced relaxation-related alpha activity and modulation of cognitive arousal. MSO also produced more consistent and pronounced effects compared with MO and SO.
Second, after 7 days of MSO spray application, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in total sleep scores and all subdomains of the KMLEQ—including sleep initiation, sleep quality, awakenings, and post-waking behavior (p < .001)—indicating substantial enhancement of overall sleep experience.
Third, stress responses significantly decreased in the MSO group across total scores and all subdomains—somatization, depression, and anger (p < .05)—suggesting multidimensional stress reduction following short-term aromatherapy exposure.
Fourth, although total psychological well-being scores did not differ between groups, the MSO group showed a significant increase in self-acceptance (p < .05) and a positive trend in autonomy, while other subdomains (purpose in life, personal growth, environmental mastery, positive relations) showed no significant changes. This implies that short-term aromatherapy may selectively influence more malleable emotional and self-perceptual factors.
Overall, the findings demonstrate that inhalation of the MSO synergy blend can induce short-term positive effects on key indicators of holistic health, including sleep improvement, stress reduction, and enhancement of certain aspects of psychological well-being. These effects suggest that essential oil inhalation may support emotional stability and psychological functioning beyond mere sensory experience. Future research should broaden the scope of populations, contexts, and duration of intervention to further validate the practical utility of MSO as an aromatherapy-based strategy for promoting emotional balance and holistic well-being.
