The defense spending of a country which had been started to accomplish the goals of national security during the cold war period is now also looking for economic goals that accompany the growth of defense industry. This study focuses on two major issues: a driver which determines defense spending and an effect which defense spending have on economic growth, investment, and export. This study compared the determinants of defense spending in 121 countries and analyzed Granger causality test between defense spending and GDP in 83 countries. Also panel regressions were performed by model Ⅰ(7 countries) and model Ⅱ. The results showed that defense spending is determined by a national security driver, not an economic one and there was no consistent relationship between defense spending and GDP. But defense R&D is likely to has a positive effect on GDP.
