The main purpose of this study was to examine the influence of maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control and depression/anxiety on adolescents' internet addiction. The subjects were 449 middle school students (210 boys and 239 girls) living in Gyeong gi-do. The data were collected using four kinds of questionnaires regarding maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control and depression/anxiety, and adolescents' internet addiction. Maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control and depression/anxiety on adolescents' internet addiction were rated by adolescents' themselves. Data were analysed by Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regressions.
The results of this study as follow:
First, when maternal monitoring was lower, adolescents' self-control was lower, and depression/anxiety was higher, their internet addiction was higher.
Second, when maternal rejection/restriction was higher, and boys' self-control was lower, their depression/anxiety was higher. And when maternal rejection/restriction was higher, girl's depression/ anxiety was higher.
Third, when maternal warmth was higher, boys' self-control was higher. And when maternal rejection/restriction was lower, and maternal monitoring was higher, girls' was self-control was higher.
Finally, for boys, maternal monitoring, their self-control and depression/anxiety directly influenced on boys' internet addiction. And maternal warmth indirectly influenced on boys' internet addiction through their self-control and depression/anxiety. And maternal rejection/restriction indirectly influenced on boys' internet addiction through their depression/anxiety. For girls, maternal monitoring, girl's self-control and depression/anxiety directly influenced on their internet addiction. And maternal rejection/restriction indirectly influenced on girls' internet addiction through their self-control or depression/anxiety. And maternal monitoring indirectly influenced on girls' internet addiction through their self-control.
This study clearly showed the relationship between adolescents' internet addiction, maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control and depression/anxiety, by exploring the path how maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control and depression/ anxiety affect adolescents' internet addiction.
