The purpose of their study was to investigate the compliance of essential hypertension patients with their drug therapy.
Compliance of hypertensive patients to their prescribed regimen is essential to the control hypertension. The theory used were to explain compliance with health maintenance or recovery regimens was the Health Belief Model. According to the model there is a relationship between patient compliance and cognition about their illness.
The subjects for this study were 406 hypertensive patients selected from 10 university hospitals in Seoul. They had been treated in internal medicine out - patient department for more than three months. Data was collected by a written questionaires from July 15 to September 15, 1980.
Analysis was done by computer and included ratio, means, standard deviation, factor analysis of variance and Pearson correlation.
      The hypothesis were
      1. High "Susceptibility" will be positively related to high compliance.
      2. High "Severity" will be positively related to high compliance.
      3. High "Benefit" will be positively related to high compliance.
      4. Low "Barrier" will be positively related to high compliance.
      5. High "Motivation" will be positively related to high compliance.
Only hypothesis # 3 was supported.
The more highly the patient received the treatment is beneficial the higher his compliance (r = 0.3564, P < 0.001)
It was thought that the reasons for lock up support for the other hypothesis were due to the data collection method; patient responses differ from patient behavior.
Recommendation were made about patient education to enhances patients perceptions of the benefits of treatment with the hope of increasing compliance.
      A. General characteristics of the subjects included;
      1. There were an almost equal number of man (49.6%) and women (50.4%), The mean age of the sample were 51.1 years.
      2. The educational level of the sample were high 61.0% had graduated from high school or university.
      3. There was an average of 5.3 members in the patient's families; 85.5% lived with their spouse.
      4. Buddhism was the religion most often reported (35.5%)
      5. The average number of clinic visit a month were 2.5, The average number of months treated were 45.01.
      6. The mean arterial pressure of the subjects were 155.1/100.2 mmHg.
      B. Information sources about hypertension
The major reported sources for information about hypertension management were doctors, followed by books and magazines and then nurses.
      C. Correlation between patient's perception and general characteristics.
      1. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between compliance and the 60-69 age group (F = 5.64, P < 0.01), and with a higher number of clinic visits per month (f = 2.47, P < 0.05).
      2. Perception of high susceptibility was positively related to the 40-49 age group (f = 2.54, P < 0.05), higher educational background (f = 3.09, P < 0.05), longer duration of diagnosis(f = 11.53, P < 0.001) and three clinic visit a month (f = 5.43, P < 0.001).
      3. Perception of high severity was higher for women (T = 3.9367, P < 0.001).
      4. Perception of the benefit of treatment was higher among the older age groups, more highly educated and with more frequent clinic visits.
      5. Perception of barrier to treatment was higher for the less highly educated.
      6. Motivation toward treatment was higher for men, for these living with a spouse and for these more highly educated.
