GT(group technology), as a manufacturing philosophy, requires grouping parts into families and machines into cells, in order to exploit similarities and achieve economies in a production system. CMS(cellular manufacturing system) is a system which utilizes the GT concept in the design of facility layout. A number of methods have been developed for machine-component cell formation. These methods have relied on classification and coding systems as well as the direct analyses of production processes.
This paper used descriptive approach not analytical one, focusing firstly on clarifying the nature, principles and applications of GT concept and secondly on reviewing and arranging the past literatures. The following two are suggested concerning the direction of studies in future. First, restrictions on cell sizes should be included in the analytical works. Second, part grouping methods should be emphasized as well as machine grouping methods in cell formation procedure.
