The purpose of this study is to investigate the literary and theological features in the Book of Lamentations. Many parts of the Old Testament consist of poems because poems presents implications and feelings well which prose can't easily present. And the Book of Lamentations presents most dramatic events and feelings in all the poems in the Old Testament.
The Book of Lamentations is a work which was born in Jerusalem not in the land of Babylon after the catastrophe in 587 B.C. and presents not only the highly elaborate literary skills but also contemporary theological aspects by drawing the difficulties and challenge of faith in details. Furthermore, it shows the thought individualism of sin and the mode of individual life of faith and the tought of universalism of YHWH and His supremacy well.
The poet thoutht that Israel's sin provoked YHWH;s wrath and the real reason of the disaster was YHWH Himself and His wrath. So he thought and hoped the mercy of YHWH by doing repentance. Sometimes he made complaints to the Lord and regarded Him as Israel's enemy owing to the difficulties which he could be capable of carrying out. But he prserved the consistent faith as a restrained hope to YHWH, Israel's Savior.
