본 논문은 『이사벨라, 혹은 바질 화분』에 나타난 키츠의 지식관을 살펴봄으로써, 그가 제시한 반-지식 혹은 포괄적 지식이 상상력과 배타적 관계가 아니라 상보적 관계에 있음을 밝히는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 먼저 순진한 여주인공과 이기적인 오빠들의 무지와 논리적 추론을 비교하고, 이어서 상상적 깨달음을 통해 세계의 포괄적 지식에 이르는 여주인공의 모습을 살펴본다. 세 번째로는 바질화분에 집중하면서 현실세계와 분리된 상상적 세계를 구상하는 여주인공의 모습을 조명한다. 이 같은 여주인공의 상태는 그녀의 죽음 후 세계와 삶의 비극성을 구전하는 피렌체사람들의 노래와 다시 한 번 비교된다. 이 과정을 통해 본 논문은 키츠가 추구한 시적 지식이 적극적 추구가 아니라 소극적 수용을 통해 얻어지는 지식이라는 것을 명확히 한다. 또한 키츠가 현실을 배제하거나 혹은 어떤 한 부분의 의도적인 구성에 의해서 얻는 지식이 아니라, 존재하는 세계 그 자체를 수용함으로써 얻어지는 지식을 추구했다는 것을 밝힌다. 이는 향후 키츠 시에서 지식이 어떤 식으로 상상력과 결합할지를 짐작하게 하는 것으로, 그의 시가 지식과 상상력의 갈등이 아니라 조화를 통해 발전해갔음을 알리게 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay aims to analyze Keats" views on knowledge in the narrative poem Isabella; or The Pot of Basil. Keats, as a poet, generally prefers imagination to reasoning. However, he simultaneously tries to discover knowledge which can help him better understand reality. His concept of half-knowledge, or extensive knowledge, comes from the desire for both knowledge and imagination. In particular, he experiments with the possibility of this kind of poetic, ambiguous knowledge in Isabella, which is written right after his initial formulation of the concept. All the conditions of the knowledge which he pursues are represented in this poem. First, Keats contrasts Isabella with her vicious brothers in order to respectively illustrate absence of knowledge and consecutive reasoning. Secondly, Keats constructs a concrete bondage between imagination and knowledge with Isabella seeing Lorenzo"s ghost. Lorenzo was her lover, murdered by her brothers. On seeing the vision of the ghost, Isabella instantly realizes that the world is full of misery, pain and sickness. Thirdly, Keats represents an imagination without knowledge through Isabella and her garden pot. Isabella has taken Lorenzo"s head from his body and laid it in a garden pot. She takes care of the pot like a mother, and also forgets all the knowledge earlier gained and firmly confines herself in the self-fulfilling world she makes with the pot. The pot becomes a great wall between her and the real world and an anti-objective correlative to Keat"s intention to receive the real world as it is. In contrast, the song by the people who learn of Isabella"s tragic love and her devotion to the garden pot again illustrates the poetic knowledge of which Keats dreams, because people imaginatively empathize with Isabella"s grief and then realize the tragic nature of the world. Though these steps, Keats clarifies that poetic knowledge should be gained in a receptive condition by chance, only by wholly experiencing the world, and also that imagination and knowledge are not in conflict with one another, but are rather complementary.
