The main focus of this study was to look into the reason behind support of presidential candidate Lee Myung Bak despite the public‘s perception of his amorality.
The study was commenced one week prior to the 17th Presidential election, one day after Lee was cleared of BBK scandal and surveyed 500 voters aged 20 or older from five major cities Seoul, Pusan, Daegu, Kwangju, and Daejeon on variables that most influenced their decision to support a candidate.
The analysis of variable factors was undertaken with support of a candidate as dependable variable and independent variables being the candidate's professionalism, fairness, morality, and trustworthiness. The support of each candidate was measured using the question "How much do you support this candidate (Jung Dong Young, Lee Myung Bak, or Kwon young gil)?" on a Likert scale of 0 to 10, 0 being none and 10 being strongly positive.
This research shows that the factors influencing support of candidates vary with each Presidential election, and that the regional connection was the single biggest factor influencing the voters. Candidates Jung and Kwon had the strongest support from Ho-nam region, while candidate Lee drew his biggest support from the Yeoung-nam region.
Therefore the regional connection is an important factor, while gender and age were not consistent factors from election to election. Two other factors often well correlated education level and socioeconomic status had little effect on this election.
Furthermore, supporters of each candidate had different set of social issues with which they were concerned. Jung's supporters were interested in North-South Korean conflict resolution and the issue of Lee being the real owner behind BBK. Lee's supports considered the state of the previous government (Roh's) as the biggest problem, while Kwon's supports were concerned with both the BBK scandal and Roh's government.
Also there was a need to identify how their own weaknesses are perceived by the voters prior to negative campaigns against the opponent. The general dissatisfaction regarding Roh's government also played a role in two of the negative campaigns. Finally, regression analysis of Lee's supporters showed correlation between their support of Lee and their belief of Lee's innocence in the BBK scandal.
