The purpose of this study is to understand adjustment process of young students who have studied alone in the foreign countries and to show phenomena based on the grounded theory. In-depth interviews were conducted for 20 teenagers who have studied abroad and 5 of their parents on September 2009~March 2010. Data were analyzed by Nvivo2, computer program for a qualitative research. As a result, this study shows `loss of presence` as the central phenomenon, `not prepared enough to studying abroad alone` as the causal conditions, `loss of confidence` `confusion of values` as the contextual conditions and `support`, `conflicts with host family` as the mediate conditions. Students were `challenging` or `avoiding` as the interaction strategy and results are accordingly categorized into `achievement type`, `escape type`, `conflict type`. Through the course of this study, `going forth the successes and conflict facing challenges facing despite indifferent` is shown as the core category. Adjustment process are divided into `phase of withdrawal` and `phase of contemplation`, `phase of trial` and `phase of recovered self-esteem`. Based on these results, this study suggests the counseling interference for young students who are under heavy burden of psychology especially at the beginning stage of studying abroad. Besides, they are suggested to seek supports by host families, teachers, churches and parents at home. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed adjustment process and adjustment types of students studying alone in foreign countries and suggested welfare approach to them.
