18세기 말 에든버러와 엘리자베스 해밀튼의 『현대 철학자들의 회고록』연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 18세기 말 에든버러를 중심으로 한 스코틀랜드 사회가 런던을 중심으로 한 영국적 담론과 관계 맺는 양상을 중심으로 엘리자베스 해밀튼의 『현대 철학자들의 회고록』(1800)을 읽어봄으로써 스코틀랜드 여성작가 해밀튼이 18세기 말 영국의 문화 담론 안에서 갖는 위치를 재조명한다.
이를 위해 본 연구에서는 먼저 18세기 후반 에든버러라는 도시와 이 도시의 문화지형에 대한 선행 연구를 수행한다. 18세기 들어 스코틀랜드 계몽주의가 만개하면서 학문과 문화의 중심지로 거듭나게 된 에든버러는 “북쪽의 아테네”라 불렸다. 18세기 중반부터 시작된 신시가지 개발은 계몽의 도시로서 에든버러의 이미지를 강화하는 데 일조했다. 근대적 시공간에 과거의 유령이 출몰하는 듯한 느낌을 불러일으키는 구시가지와 아름다운 파노라마 조망을 자랑하는 칼튼 힐은 18세기부터 관광의 도시로 떠오른 에든버러에 역설적인 매력을 더한다.
벨파스트에서 태어나 6살부터 스코틀랜드의 스털링에서 자란 해밀튼은 스코틀랜드와 잉글랜드 문단에서 중요한 자리를 차지하게 된 보기 드문 여성작가였다. 스코틀랜드인으로서의 자부심 가득한 집안 분위기 속에서 양육된 해밀튼은 『현대 철학자들의 회고록』과 교육론 등을 연이어 출간하면서 스코틀랜드 문단의 중심으로 부상한다. 소설에서 해밀튼은 관습적인 유혹은 플롯을 차용하면서 이를 통해 윌리엄 고드윈(William Godwin)으로 대표되는 급진 철학자들의 이론을 맹목적으로 수용하는 것을 경계하는 동시에 읽기를 통한 여성교육의 중요성을 강조한다. 이러한 방식을 통해 해밀튼은 푸비(Mary Poovey)가 주장한바 울스튼크래프트와 제인 오스틴(Jane Austen) 등 동시대 여성작가들에게 기대되었던 “올바른” 여성성이라는 사회적 기대를 전면부인하지 않으면서도 공공영역에서 작가로 활동하면서 자신의 사상을 개진해 나갈 수 있는 방식을 찾고자 했다.

This study reassesses Elizabeth Hamilton’s status as an author in the aftermath of the French Revolution by reading her novel _Memoirs of Modern Philosophers_ focusing on the relationship between the Edinburgh Enlightenment and the British political and cultural discourses. This study starts from reconfiguration of the cultural geography of Edinburgh in the late Eighteenth-Century, and then moves to Hamilton’s novel, whose author grew up in Stirling, Scotland to live with her aunt with a Scottish pride. With the success of _Memoirs_ and her ensuing theses on female education, Hamilton becomes a participant in the social world of Edinburgh. With her subtle strategy of intervention into the discourses of public sphere without fully resisting the ideal femininity expected to the “proper” lady of the age, Hamilton tried to search the possibility of female education and women’s self-improvement through literary education.
