일반시민들의 과학기술자 직업 선호도 결정요인을 통해 본 이공계 기피현상의 재조명

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지난 몇 년간 청소년의 이공계 기피현상은 우리나라 과학기술정책의 가장 중요한 현안이었다. 그런데 과학기술자들이 이공계 기피현상의 원인에 대한 진단과 해결방안에 대한 논의들을 주도하면서 이공계 기피현상에 대한 논의는 이들이 처한 현실과 직업적 이해관계를 반영해 과학기술자에 대한 처우개선과 사회적 보상 확대에 대한 요구로 집중되는 결과를 가져오게 되었다. 이 연구는 전국적인 설문조사 자료를 기초로 과학기술자라는 직업에 대한 일반시민들의 선호를 결정하는 요인들을 탐구해 이공계 기피현상 담론의 타당성을 비판적으로 검토했다. 분석결과 한편으로 일반시민들은 이공계 인력에 대한 사회적 경제적 처우가 낮다는 인식을 공유하고 있었다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 이공계 인력의 사회경제적 지위에 관한 인식은 과학자라는 직업에 대한 선호에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 반면 과학기술자라는 직업의 이미지가 과학기술자라는 직업에 대한 선호도에 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다 이러한 결과는 과학기술자라는 직업이 갖는 매력이 아직까지 금전적 보상이나 사회적 지위 못지않게 사회와 인류의 복리에 공헌하는 직업이라는 직업 이미지에 의해 영향을 받고 있음을 시사하며, “누가, 왜 과학기술자라는 직업을 높게 평가하고 이를 직업으로 추구하는가?”라는 질문에 대해 지금처럼 경제적ㆍ사회적 보상수준에만 초점을 맞추어 설명하는 것은 오히려 현실에 대한 객관적인 이해를 방해할 수 있음을 보여준다. 마지막으로 이 논문은 과학기술자에 대한 대중적 인식이 직업선호에 미치는 영향에 대한 함의를 논의한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As the number of applicants for the science and engineering fields in college has decreased, it has become regarded as one of the most serious problems the science and engineering policy should address in Korea. Scientists and engineers have played a key role in the discourse of why it happened and how to solve the problem. In so doing, scientists and engineers’ interests became involved so that the discourse has been centered on the postulated low levels of socal and economic rewards to scientists and engineers in Korea. By analyzing the result of a nation-wide survey, this paper examined determinants of public preference for science related occupations in order to evaluate the validity of popular assertions about why high school students became less interested in applying for science and engineering fields in college in these years. On the one hand, the public tended to accept the assertion that scientists and engineers have received smaller reward than what they deserve. On the other hand, however, public perceptions of the social and economic status of scientists and engineers did not have effects on their preference for science and engineering as an occupation. By contrast, the occupational images of scientists and the public perceptions of science turned out to have significant effects on the job preference. These findings suggest that public preference for science related occupations might be determined by the image of scientists as dedicated men who work for the truth and the benefits of mankind, instead of money or self-glory, rather than by the amount of social and financial rewards to scientists and engineers.
