The purposes of the study are to investigate learning effects of time-compressed speech and to provide design guidelines of time-compressed speech for e-learning environments. To achieve this goal, this study performed one investigative study and two experimental studies. The investigative study was performed to find out the standard speed of spoken Korean. As a result, the standard speed of conversational Korean was turned out to be 231(221-240) syllables per minute. The first experimental study was performed to investigate the learning differences between the use of four different time-compression rates (regular speed, 1.5 times fast speed, 2 times fast speed, and 2.5 times fast speed) across the two different types of supporting materials (either providing verbal only or visual supporting materials) in an e-learning situation. The second experiment was to verify the effect of learning achievement by four different rate of speech compression and the locus of learning control (system vs. learner). The results of the two experimental study show that 1) the learning materials with time compressed speech give an opportunity to listen faster without losing the degree of understanding, 2) the materials allow students to learn repeatedly during the given time period, and 3) learning achievement can be increased at the adequate time-compression rate. The findings bring about new research questions in the field of digitized speech compression because learning materials made by time compressed speech has the potentials to be used for effective and efficient learning if provided at an optimal level of compression for the given learners.
