Marcuse, Radical Politics, and the New Left in the Sixties This study is a first step toward exploring the relations between H. Marcuse, the New Left and radical politics in 'the Sixties'. Marcuse saw his hopes for socialist revolution enlivened by New Left radicalism in the 1960s. Consequently, One encounters a change in the tone of his writings in the mid-1960s from a stoical pessimism to more optimistic and utopian perspectives. In this way, the New Left rejuvenated Marcuse, intensifying and radicalizing his thinking. In new radical movements, Marcuse also found concrete referents for his concepts of the Great Refusal and new sensibility.
First, I will examine the meaning and limit of the Great Refusal that Marcuse used in One-dimensional Man, then looking at Marcuse's radical perspectives of the social change, such as the 'confrontation politics' and 'Third World' strategies from the mid-1960s to the late 1960s. Finally, I will explore Marcuse's emphasis on the 'United Front' strategy based on the political realism. Through these changes, Marcuse could propose a new perspective of socialism, seeking the new sensibility as a political force for liberation.
