In this study, the levels of social adaptability between the youth experiencing gifted education and non-gifted class students were compared and analyzed in gifted education at primary and secondary level schooling.
The subjects of this study included 1,166 students from fourth grader in elementary school to second grader of middle school.
To analyze this, frequency, standard deviation, factor analysis, Paired t-test, Independent samples t-test, Multivariate Analysis of Variance(MANOVA), etc. were utilized and examined by using SPSS 12.0 program for Windows.
The following paragraphs provide a summary of the results.
Firstly, the gifted class in learning ability and social adaptability showed a higher capacity for inner adaptability such as self-esteem, self-efficacy and self-understanding except for self image.
Secondly, even though non-gifted class students than the gifted class students displayed lower inner adaptability, showed higher in an imaginative thinking which reveals the self.
Thirdly, the gifted class students than the non-gifted class students in all of the outer social adaptability displayed more positive ability in communication, trust, intimacy, openness and understanding ability.
Finally, the gifted class students showed a higher mean score than their non-gifted counterparts in inner and outer level of social adaptability according to gender. Also, the gifted class students showed a higher mean score than their non-gifted counterparts in comparison with graders, the 4th grader students showed the most highest social adaptability but it continues to lose according to become higher graders.
Based on the results of this study, the followings are recommended for further development of the gifted and youth education.
1) To facilitate the ability of social adoption of the youth, the curriculum on the emotional and social relationship for youth should be developed.
2) The teachers education for gifted and non-gifted student should be reinforced.
3) Comparative study such as international gifted study institutions should be considered in the future studies of development of gifted education.
