This research aims to explore how the concept about ‘clothing’-which is one of the necessities of life, including food and shelter-is extended in Korean. To achieve this objective, the co-occurrence relations between the verbs ‘ipda(put on)/budda(take off)’ and their objects were examined. The concrete examples of expressions were extracted from the KAIST Corpus and the 21th century Sejong Corpus. There are a large number of nouns which combine with the verbs ‘ipda/budda’, and thus various polysemys exist. Diverse usages of polysemys cannot be explained only by a dictionary and it is also difficult to explain why such a variety of usages exists. According to the standpoint of this research, producing and understanding those expressions are possible because the ‘metaphor’ is used as a cognitive mechanism. The metaphoric aspects of the concrete object ‘clothing’ which is used as an instrument to understand the abstract concepts and experiences were classified by the meaning types(-situation, state, event, thought/emotion, object) of the combined nouns. The results are as follows. In the case of ‘situation’, there were metaphors such as [a disaster is a clothing], [a wound of the body is a clothing], [a property loss is a clothing], [controlled condition is a clothing]. In the case of ‘state’, there were metaphors such as [an attribute is a clothing], [an/a attitude/figure is a clothing], [a status/duty is a clothing], [a change is a clothing]. In the case of ‘thought/emotion’, there were metaphors such as [grace/power is a clothing], [a crime/punishment is a clothing], [a negative feeling is a clothing], [an abstract idea is a clothing]. In the case of ‘event’, the metaphor appeared to be [an act is a clothing]. Finally in the case of ‘object’, the metaphors were [a body is a clothing], [a solid material is a clothing], [a natural object is a clothing].
