성리는 성리선이다 = Human Nature and Natural Laws is the Principle of the nature meditation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

성리는『정전』「정기훈련법」 11과목 중의 하나에 해당한다. 그런데『정전』에 제시된 ‘성리’에 대한 정의는 개념이 분명치 않으므로 성리에 관한 의문사항들을 정리하여 성리의 본질을 추구하고자 한다.
소태산의 수행방법은 의문 하나였다. 소태산은 의문을 통한 집중으로 깨달음을 이루었으며 그것은 전통 한국불교에서 이루어지고 있는 ‘간화선(看話禪)’과 유사하다. 그는 대각 후 간화선을 포괄할 수 있는 공부법으로서 성리를 제시하였다. 그러나 원기 47년(1962)에 교전편수위원회는 『원불교교전』에서 성리의 정의를 바꾼다. 이것이 성리개념이 혼선을 가져온 역사적 이유이다. 성리 개념이 혼선을 가져온 교리적 이유는 성리를 방법이 아닌 것으로 간주하면서 생겼다. 또한 ‘성리’와『대종경』 성리품의 ‘성리’는 성격이 상당히 다름에도 불구하고, 같은 것으로 간주하려 한 데에서도 혼선이 왔을 가능성이 있다.
결론적으로, 성리는 성리선으로 간주해야 하며, 그 성격은 전통적인 간화선과 유사하다. 그러므로 원불교의 선법은 좌선 · 무시선 · 성리선의 세 가지로 보아야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The subject of The Human Nature and Natural Laws is one of eleven subjects in the Fixed term training, the Principal Book of Won buddhism. By the way, since the definition of the Human Nature and Natural Laws concept in the Principal Book of Won buddhism is not clear, I"d like to suggest a solution for that by reviewing the concerned questions.
One of Sotaesan"s methods of practice was to raise questions. Sotaesan got enlightenment by concentrating to the questions, and it is similar to K"anhua - ch"an meditation in traditional Korean Buddhism. After enlightenment, he presented practice of the human nature and natural laws as a training which includes K"an-hua-ch"an meditation. However, the editing committed of the Scriptures of Won buddhism switched its definition in 1962. That is why the confusion related the concept of the Human Nature and Natural Laws happened historically.
The doctrinal reason of why the confusion occurred was due to the fact that we considered the human nature and natural laws as not-a-method. And the other reason might be this: the Human Nature and Natural Laws in the Principal Book of Won buddhism and the concept of the Human Nature and Natural Laws in the chapter of the Principle of the Nature of Sotaesan"s Scripture are substantially different but some of us consider that they are the same.
In sum, the Human Nature and Natural Laws is a type of sŏn meditation which is similar to K"an-hua-ch"an meditation. Then, Won buddhism has three types of meditation like Seated meditation, Timeless meditation, and the Principle of the nature meditation.
