행복과 통근역설: 통근시간의 증가가 경기도민의 행복지수를 감소시키는가? = Happiness and Commuting Paradox : Does increasing commuting time reduce happiness?

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between commuting time and happiness, especially focusing on the workers who have different commuting destination. Our results show that increasing commuting time negatively affects happiness level of those who live in Gyeonggi- do. Particularly, as commuting time increases, happiness level of people who commute from Gyeonggi-do to Seoul decreases substantially. In addition, we estimated that their willingness-topay for a 30 minutes reduction of commuting time is about 330,000 won, which is about 9% of the average monthly household income. Our results provide important policy implications that an integrated approach with consideration of urban spatial structure is necessary to reduce commuting time of people who live in Gyeonggi-do.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리나라 대부분의 도시는 통근통행에 대한 문제를 공간구조적 차원의 통합적인 사고로 접근하지 못하고, 교통수단이나 교통서비스 그 자체만의 단편적인 문제로 평가하고 대응해왔다. 본 연구는 경기도 직장인들의 실제 통근행태( 통근수단과 통근시간)가 행복척도에 영향을 미치는가를 실증적으로 검증하였으며, 특히 서울로 통근하는 경기도민들의 행복과 경기도내로 통근하고 있는 통근자들의 행복지수에 차이가 있는가에 초점을 맞추어서 분석하였다. 분석결과 예상대로, 경기도민의 통근시간이 길어질수록 행복지수가 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 경기도 통근자들은 통근시간 30분을 단축시키기 위해 월 33만원 정도의 비용을 지불할 의사가 있었으며, 이는 월평균소득의 약 9%에 해당하는 비용임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 통근시간을 줄이기 위한 정책적인 노력, 특히 공간구조차원의 노력이 필요함을 제안하였다.
