Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) technology for Electric Vehicles (EVs) is emerging as a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of wired charging in preparation for the autonomous driving era. However, IPT systems face challenges regarding high manufacturing costs and bulky volumes due to the configuration of wireless power pads and complex resonant networks. To address these commercialization constraints, this dissertation proposes a structurally and functionally integrated system that combines the IPT system for high-voltage batteries and the essential Low-Voltage DC-DC Converter (LDC) system for low-voltage batteries.
The proposed system adopts a vertical integration structure that shares the magnetic core of the IPT receiver pad, the resonant inductor, and the LDC transformer. This approach reduces the magnetic core volume by approximately 14% compared to conventional discrete systems and significantly improves power density. Furthermore, the system realizes five distinct operational modes: bidirectional operation (G2V/V2G), IPT standalone charging, simultaneous charging, and LDC independent driving mode.
To achieve this, a Bipolar Pad (BPP) structured 2-coil power pad is employed to selectively steer the magnetic flux flow according to the standalone and simultaneous operation modes. Additionally, by utilizing the phase difference of the resonant inductor current in the outer legs of the integrated transformer, the magnetic flux is selectively controlled. This mechanism effectively blocks unnecessary coupling in the LDC circuit, ensuring the independent operation of each mode. Moreover, this study analyzes the current imbalance issue between parallel circuits caused by component tolerance during manufacturing and presents a compensation strategy using phase shift and frequency control without the need for auxiliary hardware.
To validate the feasibility and performance of the proposed integrated system, a 7.7 kVA (WPT2-class) prototype was fabricated, and the five operation modes were evaluated. Experimental results demonstrated a maximum efficiency of 93.5% (at 7.1 kW) in bidirectional standalone mode, 92.8% (at 7.2 kW) in bidirectional simultaneous mode, and 92.5%
(at 1.3 kW) in LDC standalone mode, thereby verifying the validity of the proposed system. This dissertation provides structural and control solutions to resolve the cost and power density issues, which have been major barriers to IPT commercialization. Consequently, it is expected to serve as a significant foundation for the future development of integrated
EV chargers and research on V2G-based energy storage system utilization.
