This study was conducted to compar the influence factors for depression in non-multicultural and multicultural family adolescents. For this study, data were collected using structured questionnaires targeting students of 9 middle schools in G Province, Korea. Finally, data from 304 students were analyzed. General characteristics and depression-related characteristics were analyzed through descriptive statistics. In order to analyze the effects of general characteristics and depression-related variables on depression, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson and Spearman correlation, simple and multiple regression analyses were carried using SPSS 24.0.
The study findings are as follows.
1) When comparing general characteristicsnon-multicultural family adolescents had higher school grade, Korean language ability and economic status than munltcultural youths. Mother's education was higher in multicultural family adolescents than non-multicultural counterparts
2) When comparing depression-related variables, non-multicultural family adolescents had higher peer attachment and self-esteem, but multicultural family adolescents had higher body image and depression.
3) According to the result of univariate analysis in non-multicultural family adolescents, students with low school achievement, from low familial economic status, with high academic stress, and with negative body image were significantly related to the higher depression score. Students having affectionate and responsive parents, with high peer attachment score, and with high self-esteem showed the lower depression score.
4) The result of univariate analysis in multicultural family adolescents showed that students with low school achievement, from low familial economic status, with high academic stress, with negative body image, and having a teacher as a counselor were related to the higher depression score. Students having affectionate and responsive parents, with high peer attachment score, and with high self-esteem showed the lower depression score.
5) The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that academic stress, peer attachment, and body image were the influencing factors on depression in non-multicultural family adolescents. However, according to the results of multiple regression analysis, depression was related to peer attachment and self-esteem in multicultural family adolescents.
6) Comparing the influence factors on depression in the two groups, academic stress was the biggest influencing factor on depression in the group of non-multicultural family adolescents, and it was followed by body image and peer attachment. In the group of multicultural family adolescents, self-esteem was the biggest influencing factor, and it was followed by self-esteem and peer attachment.
In conclusion, the findings of this study demonstrate that the most important thing to prevent and manage depression among non-multicultural family adolescents is reducing academic stress. And, for multicultural family adolescents, there is a need to put the top priority on prevention and management of depression by increasing their self-esteem. Therefore, this should be considered when developing and applying prevention and management programs in future. However, this study has limitation in generalizing the results throughout the country. Also, it is hard to conclude the causal relationship because this is a cross-sectional study. Nevertheless, this study is meaningful in that it is the first attempt to examine the relationships between depression-related variables and depression in multicultural family adolescent, at the same time to compare the factors influencing depression between multicultural and non-multicultural adolescents. Furthermore, this study has considerable significance by identifying that the factors influencing depression among non-multicultural family adolescents and multicultural family adolescents are different.
