기획논문: 신종교와 성소(1) : 일본 천리교 본부 성소의 구조와 종교적 특질 = FOCUS UNIT: New Religions and Holy Places 1 : The Structure and Religious Characteristics of Tenrikyo Headquarters` Sacred Place

국문 초록 (Abstract)

천리교는 일본의 신종교로서 올해로 178년의 역사를 가지고 있다. 비록 그 역사는 길지 않지만 성소의 가치를 극대화함으로써 오늘날 국제적인 종교로 성장하였다. 만일 종교연구를 할 때 종교적 공간에 초점을 맞추어 연구를 한다면 천리교는 아마도 그 대표적인 종교로서 풍부한 내용을 담고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 천리교에 있어서 가장 강력한 상징은 아마도 세계의 중심을 강조하는데 있다 할것이다. 감로대, 신전, 집터를 포함하여 천리교의 전체 공간은 곧 세계의 중심을 나타내고 있으며, 그것을 일상 공간과 구분짓고 있다. 이 중심에 기초를 둔 모든 건축물과 전체 도시는 세계 창조를 수행하고 또 그것을 모방하고 있다. 이러한 천리교의 성소를 이해하기 위해서는 그 중심의 상징을 분석할 필요가 있다. 엘리아데의 이론에 따르면 천리교에 나타난 중심의 상징은 다섯 가지 특성으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 성소는 성현의 장소라는 점. 둘째, 성소는 인간에 의해 선택되어지는 것이 아닌 발견되어지고 특정한 방식으로 인간에게 계시되는 것이라는 점. 셋째, 성소는 세계창조의 지점이라는 점, 넷째, 성소는 중심의 상징으로서 그곳에 접근하는 것은 일종의 입문의례이면서 영웅과도 같이 불사를 획득하는 것을 의미한다는 점. 다섯째, 성소는 낙원에의 노스텔지아를 나타낸다는 점 등이 그것이다. 이상의 특징에 입각해볼 때 천리교는 그 건축물을 통해 중심의 상징을 잘 표현하고 있다고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Tenrikyo is Japanese new religion descended from 178 years. Even though its historic foundation is not too old but it becomes a worldwide religion by maximizing the value of sacred place. If someone research a religion focusing on the meaning of religious space, Tenrikyo might be a representative religion that has rich contents. The most intensive symbolism of Tenrikyo’s sacred place is on the center of world. The whole place of Tenrikyo’s headquarters including Kanrodai, shrine hall, and hometown, is the center of world and differentiate it with usual place. Every architecture and whole town based on this center carry on creating world and imitation for the beginning of the world. In order to understand the sacred place of Tenrikyo, we need to review the symbolism of the center. Based on Mircea Eliade’s “Patterns in Comparative Religion”, we can say five particularities on Tenrikyo’s symbolism of the center. First one, the sacred place is the place of hierophany. Second one, the sacred place is not chosen by human but is founded by human, and it’s revealed to human with some way. Third one, the sacred place is the spot for creation. Fourth one, sacred place is the symbolism of the centre. The approaching to the place means a kind of initiating rite and same that achieve immortality like a hero. Fifth one, the sacred place reveal the nostalgia for paradise. According to these points, the sacred place of Tenrikyo expresses the symbolism of the center very well.
