During the screening of cellulase producing microorganisms, the bacterium K 39-1 was selected from soils and leaves. The cultural conditions for the enzyme production were examined, and the results obtained were as follows: the maximal enzyme production was obtained when the cells were cultured in the medium supplemented with 2.5% of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt(CMC). It was also found that the most effective nitrogen and mineral sources were yeast extract and CaCl2, respectively. The most effective production of enzyme was obtained at 30℃ and pH 5,
