In terms of how much control learners can have and whether the site has a hierarchical structure within the learning materials, the four types of learning materials are classified as (1) whole menu type (2) subsequential menu type (3) sequential textbook type, and (4) no menu type. In this study we compared students` biology learning achievement level according to the types of web based learning materials. As a result, students using the whole menu type showed a significantly higher achievement than students who used the no menu type (p<.05). In addition, the students of the sequential textbook type group revealed a significantly higher achievement than those who used no menu type (p<.05). Therefore, for an effective use of the web in science teaching and learning, we need to clarify the interrelationships within concept networks presented through links on the Web so that complex patterns within a knowledge structures can be effectively delivered to learners.
