It is very promising to see the increase in the enrolment of special needs students in higher education in Malaysia. This phenomenon create challenges in efforts to educate and to increase levels of awareness among the lecturers and the supporting staffs on the needs of those students. A study was conducted at an institution of higher learning in Malaysia to gauge on the lectures` willingness to provide learning support for students with special needs. The sample consisted of 12 lecturers from the Science and Social Science faculties. The respondents had previous experiences of having students with special needs in their classes. Data was obtained by interviewing the respondents through the use of a newly developed interview protocol comprised of four constructs; knowledge about students with special needs, acceptance of students with special needs, existence of support services provided, and challenges in the teaching and learning for students with special needs inclusive of support provide by the lecturers. The interview data was transcribed verbatim and was categorized into the four research constructs. Results show that lecturers were aware of and were able to identify students with special needs who are following their course. There seemed to be three categories of readiness acceptance: lecturers who fully accept special needs students in their class, lectures who are not accepting , and lecturers who accept students with physical problems only. Some lecturers admitted that they faced challenges in providing support to their students with special needs. The findings of this study have implications for the provision of support for students with special needs, and support for lecturers in managing the diversity of learners in their classrooms.
