다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

The idea of university as an institution has been changing rapidly as the character of knowledge and learning underwent a considerable change in the face of social demands. So-called separation of 'two cultures' was promoted with the appearance of new disciplines and the disappearance of the meta-discourse which directed activities of individual sciences. Recently, however, a notable tendency of integration is made salient in the academic world in the process of the methodological pursuit of realizing the 'substantial rationality' as Immanuel Wallerstein points out. If this attempt is not to slide into eclecticism or introduction of a new ideology to the sphere of learning, it needs to be made in the way of contributing to one's play of disinterested intelligence and total apprehension of the world.
This paper purports to present 'literature' as the principle of integration, informed by Leavis's high valuation on the status of literature. We begin with Leavis's recognition of modern civilization including the question of university and a democratic education. Next part is the elaboration of Leavis's view of language and literature. For him, language represents the essential vitality of one culture, and literary discipline provides an opportunity to train sensibility and thinking which allow one to grasp deep realities of human crisis. Lastly, present paper illuminates the specific scene of Leavis's practical criticism to confirm the validity of his view of literature.
