The purpose of this study is in offering a framework for the reform of general education curriculum. The goal of general education for a college is derived from the idea that a particular college sets for itself, and it functions to confirm the mental qualities of an educated person.
We propose core curriculum for general education. It should consits of 7∼8 areas of study established through collective deliberation, such as areas of communication, cultural heritages, arts, values, logical thinking, science, historical consciousness and international awareness, and so on. And within each of these areas 6∼10 courses are arranged, 1∼2 of these courses made common and required while the rest left optional, and the student is required to take a minimum credit points as established. Thus, general education consists of required and elective courses. The college education itself is distributed over 3 divisions, gengral education, major-related subjects (general elective) and major.
2 or less credit points can be given to core curriculum. With 140 points for graduation, 30∼35% of these is considered desirable for general education. The general education courses should be perferably distributed throughout 4 years instead of cramming them into the first and second years. The core curriculum distinguishes itself in that all students participate in it in search of meaning and it bestows the qualities of an educated person to the student.
It is desirable that a specific office be set up for managing the general education. An independent department of general education, for instance, with its own director, would be responsible for the quality control, development and evaluation of its curriculum.
