A Study on the Laboring Aunt Representation and Care Politics in Korean Contemporary Novels

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the representation of the laboring aunt in Korean contemporary novels that embodies the diagnosis of the care crisis and the new needs of the care relationship in order to explore the politics of care. Considering the three elements of care relationships as subject positionality, relational assemblages, and power distribution, this study analyzes the feature of care crisis and care relationships. According to the results, the laboring aunt representation appears as a gendered care labor provider. The care giving-receiving relationship becomes a care-political site of encounter by narrativizing the care crisis according to variables such as gender, generation, class, sexuality, and migration. Through the process of (de)constructing care relationships, it reveals the complexity of (in)identification in care relationships and suggests new desires for good care and care relationships. In conclusion, the representation of the laboring aunt is a signifier of the care crisis, the complexity of care relationships, and the desire for good care in Korean society today.
