한국형 통합 영어교육 프로그램의 방향 = Toward Korean Immersion of English Education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

외국어로서 영어 교육의 중요성이 높아지면 질수로 영어 교육의 효율성을 높이고자 하는 노력이 더욱 절실해진다. 현행 초등학교 영어교육의 효과를 극대화하기 위해 서는 수업 시간을 늘여야 될 뿐만 아니라 그동안 외국어 교육사에 효과적인 방법으로 자리 잡은 몰입교육을 우리나라의 실정에 맞는 방법으로 도입하여 실시하는 것이다.
이를 위해서 몰입식 영어교육의 국내외 사례를 살펴보고 국가교육과정 체제로 운영되고 있는 우리의 교육현실을 고려해서 교육과정의 내용교과와 영어를 통합한 한국형 통합 영어교육 프로그램의 방향을 제안한다. 개략적으로 그 방향은 영어 사용 정도에 대한 유연성과 부분몰입을 절차적 지식을 많이 요하는 예술과 체육 교과에서부터 수학과와 실험과 탐구 학습을 요하는 과학 및 사회과로 점차적으로 넓혀서 진행하는 것이다. 아울러 영어과의 내용은 이들 학과를 영어로 배우는데 필요한 CALP를 기를수 있도록 하는 교과의 내용으로 조직되고 지원하는 형태로 운영되어야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As English plays the de facto international language, the importance of Korean learners basic English proficiency has increased over the past years. Learners demand that English education must effectuate the most needy English skills and be methodologically more accountable. The current issues in English is two folded: a far fewer than necessary English class hours in elementary schools that make meeting the objectives nearly impossible and the irrelevance between English education and learners everyday experiences. The paper deals with later issue, but strongly recommend that English class hours should be increased.
In daily lives, learners have difficulty in finding the usefulness of what they learn in English classes. They don t use English in their after-school activities except English classes in private institute after school. The study reviewed cases of English education integrating learning contents. This was done in one of several forms of content-based English learning from immersion in its strongest form to English for specific purposes in its weakest form. Based on the types and forms of content-based English education, the study purports the Korean immersion as a from of future English education integrating language and contents.
Canadian immersion in its prototype is not applicable to Korean classrooms because Korean teachers do not have the native or near-native fluency in English, and also teachers need to reconstruct the current curriculum since it does not imply the integration between English and contents. The curriculum modification can be done in different forms depending on the affordability of the schools. If school budget allows to employ a native speaker assistant teacher, schools can run a parallel sessions which will include expanding class hours than the ones in the national curriculum. If school budget doesn t allow the hiring of native teacher, Korean teacher will integrate themes and contents of different subjects with English. In this case, the use of English will range from English only to partial English, and also the form of immersion will be partial starting from procedural subjects such as PE, music and art to mathematics to social studies and science requiring investigative and experiments.
