제주섬 정체성 변화에 관한 비교 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 제주섬 정체성 변화를 형성주의의 시각에서 학제간 연구방법에 의하여 다루어진 것으로, 제주섬의 정체성이 역사/정치, 사회, 문학, 철학, 관광의 영역에서 각각 어떻게 형성되고, 유지되며, 변화해 왔는지 역사적 흐름과 타 지역과의 상호관계의 맥락에서 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 보편적이면서 특수성을 갖는 정체성의 변화를 찾아보고자 하였다.
제주섬이 가지고 있는 자연환경과 역사적 배경을 통해 타 지역과 비교되는 정체성이 형성되고 이러한 정체성은 시대적 상황 및 각 분야마다 다른 모습으로 표출되었을 것이다. 또한 보는 시각에 따라 다르게 의미를 부여하고 해석되었을 가능성도 높다.
제주인의 문화적 이미지는 제주섬과 타자와의 권련관계의 변화에 따라 순응 또는 저항의 행동을 통해 형성되어 왔다. 천박한 자연환경과 중앙으로부터 혜택보다는 수탈과 착취만을 강요받았던 역사를 갖고 있는 제주섬은 생존을 위한 순응과 많은 민란을 통하여 생존을 위한 또 다른 모습의 저항의식이 내재되어 있는 것을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 역사적 경험과 이에 대한 의식 세계는 민요나 기타 문학작품에서도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 특히, 문학작품은 그 시대의 삶이 반영된 것으로서 주어진 여건에서 사람들이 살아가기 위해 노력했던 흔적은 바로 그 시대의 정체성이라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 제주여성 특히 비천함과 강인함의 모순적 이미지를 동시에 갖고 있는 해녀의 역사와 의식세계를 통하여 제주섬의 정체성과 제주정신의 맥락을, 그리고 현대사에서 관광산업 중심의 지역개발 과정에서 표출된 각종 개발반대운동이 사회운동으로의 확산 및 관광지로 성장 발전하면서 겪게되는 사회·문화적 변화 속에서 제주섬 정체성의 한 단면을 찾아볼 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the process of formation, maintenance, and the changes of Cheju people's identities. It bases on the analysis of social relations with 'the other' in Cheju history. This study takes an interdisciplinary approach; That is, the identity changes are studied from the different field such as history, politics, women, tourism, philosophy, and literature, and discussed together to draw conclusion.
The Cheju peoples, peripheral to the center of korean mainland, has been suffered from the conflicts between the negative and positive images of themselves. For Cheju women, the conflict of images between the weak and the strong has shown very extremely. The processes of adaptation and resistance in relation to 'the others' are well represented in Cheju literature. Recently the promotion of tourism industry has transformed the social relations as well as cultural images of Cheju Island. The Cheju people begin to establish the positive image of themselves in terms of political identity.
