The primary purpose of this project was to develop a listening course book that
focused on how to improve English listening skills by promoting metacognitive
awareness of L2 listening, including English listening strategies training. This book was
designed in particular to target those who are interested in taking foreign language high
school entrance exams, as they are in need of listening skills development. Furthermore,
this book provides an alternative to conventional listening books, by offering a variety
of activities designed to facilitate metacognative listening training, while discouraging
unfavorable listening habits such as focusing too much on minor details.
In order to meet this goal, a review of extensive research on listening was
conducted. It included topics on general approaches to listening, features of spoken
English, factors influencing listening, metacognitive listening instruction and listening
strategies training. In addition, published listening materials and foreign language high school entrance exams were analyzed in order to meet the needs and demands of the
target users for the development of a listening course book. Finally, three sample
chapters were created based on the findings from the review of the literature and results
of the analyses.
