다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The object of this article is to rethink Gilberto Freyre in order to understand brazilian society and culture, who is a very important person with identity disputes and intelligences in Brazil. I make a comparative study for making clear differences between pernambucanity and brazility. On the basis of this oppositive standpoints, it was analyzed activities of Gilberto Freyre in 1920s. In the process of his growth, he had a outside viewpoint in inside and he also had discernment to understand brazilian society and culture. In particular he had unique standpoint in interpretation of race and culture. Further more he criticized modernism owing to destructive characters and he asserted regionalism as alternative model of modernism to affect a settlement of social and economic problems of Nordeste. In these points, he was not modernist to pursue the brazility but regionalist to inquire into the nordestinity as pernambucanity, bahianity and alagoanity. At the same time he supported the oligarchy system of Old Republic from the viewpoints of political elite in the region. Conventionally Freyre' families had political and economical power in Pernambuco. For that reason, he got pleasure with highly social and intellectual position after return to home. At these points Gilberto Freyre was a pernambucanist, regionalist and conservative to defense tradition and culture of Nordest rather than a brazilist, modernist and reformist in 1920s, before the Casa Grande e Senzala.
