Aquatic humic substances of natural origin are important in water chemistry as well as water treatment processes. They have great effect on coagulation, ozone oxidation, activated carbon adsorption, complexation with metals and trihalomethane formation. This study, aquatic humic substances in Paldang and Daechung lake were extracted and characterized. Humic and fulvic acid components were quantified and UV-VIS spectra were obtained. Molecular mass distribution was analyzed using gel chromatography. Infrared and fluorescence methods were also used to characterize the humic substances.
