A positive view of self is a critical element for psychological well-being. However, the relative importance of a positive self-view on psychological functioning may differ depending on cultural contexts. Prior cross-cultural research has documented that positive self-regards bear greater importance for Westerners compared with non-Westerners. The present study further extends this line of research by examining adolescents in two cultural contexts that differ in the emphasis on positive self-view, the United States (n = 1002) and Korea (n = 3933). The relationship between self-esteem and psychological distress across cultural groups was examined. Consistent with the previous research, American adolescents reported higher levels of self-esteem than Korean adolescents did. Moreover, positive self-regard was more strongly associated with psychological distress as assessed by negative emotions (depression, anxiety, anger) for American adolescents compared with Korean adolescents. Consistent with previous literature, the findings of the present study suggest that positive self-regard has different effects in psychological well-being depending on the cultural contexts.
