Sustainable infrastructure development requires balancing structural performance, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility throughout the life cycle. Bridge systems, as essential components of transportation networks, consume significant material and energy resources during construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. Conventional life cycle assessment (LCA) frameworks, however, focus mainly on the production stage and often neglect the dynamic interactions among material circulation, deterioration, and climate-adjusted risks that shape long-term sustainability. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach that quantifies the interdependent effects of material circularity, maintenance demand, and environmental performance within a unified analytical framework.
This research proposes a comprehensive multi-LCA framework for circular economy (CE) performances and risk assessment of bridge infrastructure by integrating CE principles, probabilistic maintenance modeling, and climate-adjusted deterioration prediction. The framework advances beyond conventional LCA by explicitly incorporating time-dependent deterioration, adaptive maintenance, and the multi-recycling potential of materials, enabling a realistic and holistic evaluation of infrastructure sustainability under changing environmental conditions.
The first component establishes a hierarchical CE performance assessment procedure coupling life cycle assessment with material flow analysis (MFA). Conventional circularity metrics were extended into multi-recycling indicators at three hierarchical levels—material (〖MCI〗_MR), element (〖ECI〗_MR), and system (〖SCI〗_MR)—to quantify resource persistence and recovery across successive life cycles. Comparative analyses of prestressed concrete (PSC) and steel plate girder bridges revealed that circularity performance and global warming potential (GWP) are governed primarily by material recyclability and the number of recycling loops. By integrating these hierarchical indicators, the framework translates CE principles into measurable engineering metrics, bridging the gap between conceptual sustainability goals and quantifiable environmental outcomes.
The second component introduces a probabilistic life cycle maintenance model integrating empirical inspection data and stochastic analysis. Recognizing that the use phase is one of the most uncertain yet impactful stages, Monte Carlo simulations were employed to estimate maintenance frequency, cumulative costs, and GWP at the element level. Regression-based relationships between cost and GWP linked economic and environmental impacts, resulting in a life cycle maintenance database that reflects actual operational patterns rather than static assumptions.
The third component extends the framework to incorporate long-term climate change effects. Regional meteorological data were coupled with IPCC climate projections to evaluate the influence of temperature and humidity on chloride ingress and steel corrosion. Gaussian mixture and copula-based models generated probabilistic environmental data and deterioration correction factors, which were embedded in probabilistic performance functions to assess how climate-adjusted risks alter maintenance intervals, failure probabilities, and environmental impacts. This integration transforms deterministic deterioration models into adaptive, risk-informed predictive tools for assessing future bridge performance.
Finally, the CE performances and risk-informed models were consolidated into an integrated multi-LCA framework for comprehensive sustainability evaluation. Preventive and essential maintenance scenarios revealed that while infrequent interventions may reduce short-term cost, they increase long-term emissions due to major replacements. Conversely, optimized preventive strategies can lower cumulative GWP and extend service life, demonstrating the trade-off between cost efficiency and carbon reduction.
Collectively, this dissertation advances a unified, data-driven, and risk-informed framework for sustainable bridge management. Its originality lies in (1) extending CE principles through hierarchical multi-recycling indicators, (2) establishing probabilistic maintenance models linking operational data with environmental assessment, (3) incorporating climate-dependent deterioration mechanisms into life cycle prediction, and (4) unifying these methodologies into a CE-LCA structure that quantifies trade-offs among cost, carbon, and circularity. The framework strengthens the scientific foundation for sustainability assessment and provides practical guidance for designing, maintaining, and operating infrastructure that is both resource-efficient and climate-resilient.
