      The influence of caffeine on the neuro-endocrine axis and lipolysis responses to mild exercise in a cold environment was studied in eight healthy males (age, 20.1±0.4 yrs; height 175.4±2.4 ㎝; weight, 73.5±9.0; VO₂max, 42.4±4.2 ml/㎏/min). The subjects exercised (30 min of treadmill at 60% VO₂max in a cold environment, temperature, 5.9±0.2℃, relative humidity, 54.0±1.4%) after ingesting caffeine (6㎎/㎏, CAFF) and non-caffeine (CON). The study resulted in an increased plasma epinephrine, norepinephrine in CON and CAFF within groups (PRE vs. POST, p<.05). However, there was no significant difference in plasma catecholamines compared with the CON trial. Responses to the CAFF after exercise had significantly higher plasma cortisol and circulating free fatty acids levels compared with the CON trial(p<.05). Thus, a combination of caffeine and a cold environment stimulate the neuro-endocrine axis and increas lipid metabolism. The accelerated mobilization and oxidation of lipids with caffeine and a cold environment may support the role for non-shivering thermogenesis in humans.
