미국 기독여성금주협회(WCTU)와 1920년대 내한 여성선교사의 초기금주운동

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1874년 미국에서 결성된 기독 여성 금주 협회와 1920년대 한국 여성 사회에서 조직된 조선 기독 여자 금주회를 관련지어 미국 기독 여성 금주 협회의 영향과 내한 미국 여성 선교사의 역할이 당시 한국 여성과 사회에 어떻게 기여를 하였는지 조명하고자 하였다. 미국 남북 전쟁 후 많은 여성협회들이 생겨나면서 가장 강력했던 여성단체인 기독 여성 금주 협회는 여성들의 호응을 얻어 급성장하여 미국전 역에 지부를 두는데 그치지 않고 세계로 나아가 여러나라에 지부를 두고 활동하였다. 세계 지부들 중의 한 곳이었던 조선 기독 여자금주회는 미국에서 금주운동을 경험한 여성선교사들에 의해 시작되어 조선 기독 여성들에게 소개되고 기독여학교와 교회교인들을 중심으로 성장하여 조선전국에 확산되어 사회개혁운동으로서 그 진가를 발휘했다. 이를 입증하기 위한 자료로는 조선 여성들과 일상을 함께 했던 여성 선교사의 일지, 세계기독여성금주회의 총무 틴링선교사가 조선을 방문하여 남긴 저서를 비롯하여, 미국 기독여성금주협회 관련 서적들과 당대를 기록한 관련 자료들을 근거로 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study relates the Christian Womens Temperance Union, formed in the United States in 1874, and the Joseon Christian Womens Temperance Union, which was organized in the Korean womens society in the 1920s, and examines the influence of the American Christian Womens Temperance Union and the role of American female missionaries in Korea on Korean women and society at the time. We wanted to shed light on how it contributed to. After the American Civil War, as many womens associations emerged, the most powerful womens organization, the Womens Christian Temperance Union, grew rapidly with the support of women, not only establishing branches throughout the United States, but also moving into the world and establishing branches in many countries. The Joseon Christian Womens Temperance Union, which was one of the worlds branches, was started by female missionaries who experienced the temperance movement in the United States, was introduced to Korean Christian women, and grew around Christian girls schools and church members, spreading throughout Joseon and bringing about social reform. It demonstrated its true value as a movement. Materials to prove this include the diary of a female missionary who spent her daily life with Korean women, a book written by Tinling, secretary general of the WWCTU, when she visited Joseon, books related to the WCTU and related materials recording the contemporary period.
