Yijing as a Pilgrim Monk at Nālandā

With Yijing and his fellow monks, we see the great devotion and brevity to their belief in Buddhism. Yijing describes the life in Indian Buddhist monasteries on two bases: One reflects his understanding in accordance to the text of vinaya and another is based on his experience and observation in the monasteries or in other places. In Yijing’s own words his book was written in “accordance to the sacred teachings and the principle rules practised now in India.”Yijing in his Nanhai jigui neifa zhuan provides an almost complete picture of the Buddhist disciplinary life in India, South east Asia and China. Based on his own observation he described in his book every detail related to the life in Indian Buddhist monasteries. In my paper, I have mentioned, he said he discussed all matters according to the rules of the Mūlasarvāstivādins and one should not mix or confuse them with the rules of other nikāyas.
In Yijing’s Datang xiyu qiufa gaoseng zhuan we find much more detailed description, on the architectural plan of Nālandā. It includes discussion on the history of Nālandā, the origin of its name, the characteristics of its architectural distribution and building construction, and the scenery around Nālandā. Since these reports are very detailed they make up for the lack of archeological discorveries and help understand the former glory of Nālandā.
