미국 식민지 시기 교육사를 바라보는 세 가지 시선; Cubberley, Bailyn, Curti를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 미국의 식민지 시기 교육사 연구에 대한 세 가지 서로 다른 입장을 Cubberley, Bailyn, Curti를 중심으로 비판적으로 고찰하고, 새로운 교육사 연구의 가능성을 탐색하는 데 있다. 미국의 식민지 시기 교육사 연구를 전통적 접근, 문화적 수정주의 접근, 급진적 수정주의 접근의 세 가지 관점으로 구분하여 각 접근이 취하고 있는 교육에 대한 지배적인 관점이 어떠했는지, 또 왜 그러한 관점이 등장하게 되었는지 분석하였다. 연구결과는 지금까지 이루어진 미국의 식민지 시기 교육사 연구에 세 가지 흐름은 각각 특정 사실을 드러내는 데 기여하고는 있으나, 인간 고유의 삶의 양상 가운데 하나인 교육의 흔적을 드러내는 데까지 이르지는 못하였음을 보여주었다. 이것은 교육사 연구가 교육이란 무엇인가에 대한 치열한 이론적 고민 없이 학교를 중심으로 하는 공교육제도의 성립과 변천을 주 연구대상으로 삼아왔기 때문이다. 따라서 자율적 학문의 한 분파로서 교육사 연구는 새롭게 접근될 필요가 있으며, 장상호의 교육본위론은 하나의 대안이 될 수 있을 것이다.
