In Chungcheongnam-do, the ratio of high-speed national roads against regular ones is higher than nationwide. In addition, the province has poor railroad conditions. Thus, most of the freight transport depends on vehicles. Chungcheongnam-do is the hub of international interchange in the region surrounding the Yellow Sea and the center of international transportation, which connects to the main regions of North East Asia. Thus, an increase in domestic and overseas trade volume is expected.
The purpose of this study is to research the effects of road construction on total traffic and freight transport volume in terms of spatial structure based on these spatial and social backgrounds.
In this study, three axes of Years 1997, 2002, and 2007 were established. The declination and percentage changes of each axis and the traffic ratio of regular national roads were analyzed. As a result, as roads have been newly built, the declination of each axis have decreased and the traffic ratio of each axis have changed. The percentage of regular national roads have changed as roads have been built. Since the construction of roads greatly affects changes in spatial structure, methods for traffic distributions need to be conceived in order to develop Korea in balance and to efficiently use financial resources. In addition, strategical systems or services will be needed to increase or decrease traffic volume.
