This study aims to examine the specific changes in the transmission process of Jungnyeongsan from Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang. For this purpose, the study set its scope of analysis to Kim Gi-su‘s transcription Pyojeong Manbang Jigok Daegeum Bo published by the Yiwangjik Aakbu in 1939, and the National Gugak Center’s Daegeum Jeongak Bo, published in 2016, examining approximately 77 years of musical change. For comparative analysis, the key-signature system of the Aak-bo was transposed to the Hwangjong standard, and the dotted quarter note reflecting the triple subdivision was set as the reference beat, transcribed into staff notation of four measures with a 6·4·4·6 Daegang division, thereby establishing the foundation for objective comparative research.
Through comparative analysis of the skeletal melodies of the two sources after transposition and transcription, three principal causes of divergence were identified. First, melodic expansion through the addition of skeletal tones. Patterns appearing primarily at the opening of each movement add skeletal tones to increase the density of the melodic structure, and the Im-Jung-Im pattern in beats 13–15 is identified as a leaping melodic variation designed to effectively emphasize the Tteo-i-eo ornament on beat 15, the strong beat of the Jangdan. Second, melodic condensation through Junbak. While the essential melodic content remains the same, the position of skeletal tones shifts by one beat unit according to the breath and Jangdan unit of actual performance. Third, melodic reconstruction. When the surrounding melody and ornaments are examined comprehensively, cases where the pitch progression itself differs entirely demonstrate that the melody of the Daegeum Bo was independently reconstructed during the transmission process.
An examination of the skeletal melody concordance rate by movement revealed that the first (75.0%) and fifth (77.5%) movements preserved the original form most substantially, while the fourth movement (53.8%) showed the most pronounced independent melodic reconstruction. The overall average concordance rate of approximately 70% serves as an indicator of continuity in transmission between the two scores, while the approximately 30% of points of variation demonstrates that Jeongak is not a fixed and immutable music, but has flexibly evolved in accordance with actual performance practice.
Regarding the ornamental notation, the total frequency of Sigimsae, tempo markings, and performance techniques recorded in the scores was 140 instances in the Aak-bo and 274 in the Daegeum Bo, indicating that the notational density of Sigimsae in the Daegeum Bo approximately doubled. The frequency of Tteo-i-eo increased markedly, while the Teukgang marks present in the Aak-bo are entirely absent in the Daegeum Bo, demonstrating that the same intention of emphasizing a tone has been realized through different means of expression depending on the era and notational system.
Finally, an examination of the melodic scale characteristics confirmed that the Aak-bo employs a pentatonic scale of Hwang-Tae-Jung-Im-Mu, while the current Daegeum Bo adopts a scale structure of Hwang-Hyeop-Jung-Im-Mu, in which Hyeopjong (夾) appears in place of Taeju(太). This reflects the historical changes that the Gyemyeonjo mode of Jeongak has undergone, including the disappearance and replacement of constituent tones, and the Hwang-Tae-Jung-Im-Mu structure of the Aak-bo is interpreted as a transitional form predating the standardization of the Gyemyeonjo scale.
In conclusion, this study has examined the notational system and transmission history of the Daegeum melody of Jungnyeongsan from Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang through the medium of musical scores, and holds significance in that it simultaneously illuminates both the continuity and the transformation of Jeongak transmission.
