노인의 자녀 사별 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구 = A Phenomenological Study on the Elderly’s Experience of Child Bereavement

The purpose of this study is to explore the essence and the meaning of the elderly’s experience of child bereavement and to have an in-depth understanding the patterns of changes in the lives of the elderly who lost their children in their old age. To achieve the goal of this study, it has set the research question as follows: “How is the elderly’s experience of child bereavement?”. It has chosen the qualitative research method, especially Giorgi’s(1985) phenomenological approach method which can be best used in understanding the essence and meaning of the experiences of research participants. The data collection for this study was conducted through the in-depth interviews with 6 elderly people who had lost any of their children to death in their old age, from February to September 2018. The analysis identified from the statements of the 6 participants 7 components and 21 subcomponents that constructed the essential structure of the elderly’s experience of child bereavement. The 7 components are <Holding on to memory: the episodes about my child, afraid of being forgotten>, <Experience Hell in this world>, <Living as half-mad>, <Living as a hollow shell>, <A struggle between the two worlds>, <Quotidianization of grief>, and <Embracing life in death>. Based on the discussions of the research findings, this study suggested social welfare implications and practical interventions as to the elderly’s experience of child bereavement and made suggestions for follow-up studies.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 노년기에 자녀의 죽음을 겪은 노인들의 사별 경험과 사별 이후 그들의 삶의 변화 양상에 대해 심층적으로 이해하기 위하여 수행된 현상학적 연구이다. 연구참여자로는 노년기에 성인 자녀를 잃은 경험이 있는 노인 6명이 선정되었고, 자료수집은 2018년 2월부터 9월까지 개별 심층인터뷰를 통해 진행되었으며, Giorgi(1985)의 현상학적 연구방법을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 <기억의 끈 붙잡기: 잊혀질까 두려운 내 자식 이야기>, <이승에서 지옥을 경험하기>, <반 미치광이로 살아가기>, <빈 껍데기로 살아가기>, <두 개의 세상에서 버텨내기>, <슬픔의 일상화 과정>, <죽음 속에서 삶을 부둥켜안기> 등 총 7개의 구성요소가 도출되었다. 연구의 결과를 토대로 노인의 자녀 사별 경험에 대한 사회복지적 함의와 사회복지실천 개입방안 등에 논의하였고, 후속연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.
