Monopolistic Bargaining and Inflated Salaries in the Sports Job Market1 = 독점적 바게이닝과 스포츠 노동시장에서의 임금 인상

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 프로 선수들의 계약에 의해 발생할 수 있는 스포츠 산업내 시장 비효율성을 파악하고 이 비효율성이 사회적 후생에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 수 있는지 분석하고자 한다. 일반적으로 프로 선수들은 보다 큰 계약을 이끌어 내기 위해 협상기술이 뛰어난 브로커를 고용한다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 이러한 브로커들은 자신들에게 돌아오는 수수료를 위해 바게이닝(bargaining) 기술을 활용, 선수가 갖는 경제적 가치를 뛰어넘는 임금 계약을 성사시키게 되므로 이러한 현상은 사회적 후생을 해칠 수 있다는 직관을 가능케 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 지금껏 이루어진 선행논문들과는 다르게 계약 관계를 구단주와 선수, 선수와 브로커, 그리고 브로커와 구단주간에 벌어지는 삼각게임으로 인식하고 그 삼각 관계에서 서로 다른 별개의 두 인센티브가 존재함을 보이며 별개의 두 인센티브가 결국 선수의 임금을 인상시키는 중요한 원인임을 밝히고자 한다.

In sports, the contract design of professional players is beset with issues because of market efficiency. Professional sports players hire skillful brokers to have better contracts. This study’s main objective is to show how a broker can inflate a contract offer and affect social welfare. Behind an inflated offer are two types of incentives. Such incentives result from a tripodal game among owner, player, and broker. Due to these two incentives, a player"s salary is inflated, and the inflated salary hurts the efficiency of a job market.
